About the Promoters:

NLC India Ltd., (NLCIL) is a Government of India Company engaged in lignite and coal mining and power generation under the administrative control of Ministry of coal, operates the largest open-pit lignite mines in India with an aggregate installed capacity of 30.6 MTPA. NLCIL started operation in its first coal mine in Talabira, Odisha with normative capacity of 20 MTPA. Presently NLCIL operates at Neyveli (Tamil Nadu), Thermal Power Station-I(350MW), Thermal Power Station-II(1470MW) and Thermal Power Station-I Expansion(420MW), Thermal Power Station-II Expansion(500MW), Neyveli New Thermal Power Plant(500MW), Barsingsar Power Plant(250MW) in Barsingar, Rajasthan and Green Power (Wind - 51 MW, Solar - 1352.56 MW) all aggregating to 4893.56 MW of power to meet the power requirements of States.

Tamil Nadu Electricity Board(TNEB) was a body corporate registered under the erstwhile Electricity (Supply) Act 1948, under the administrative control of Government of Tamilnadu. TNEB has been providing and distributing the electric power to the requirements of Tamilnadu since 1957. As per the mandatory requirements of the Electricity Act 2003, during the year 2010, The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board was restructured itself by establishing a holding company with the name “TNEB Ltd” and two subsidiary companies namely “Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation” (TANTRANSCO) and “Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Ltd” (TANGEDCO) have been incorporated. Subsequent to restructuring of TNEB, generation of power and project activities are under the purview of TANGEDCO.

 Formation & Implementation:

The coal based 2x500 MW Thermal Power Project was a dream of NLCIL to diversify from Lignite to Coal Based power plants and to use the exemplary knowledge gained over the years in power generation. It also fulfilled the mission of NLCIL to spread its wings outside Neyveli in Tamilnadu. The search for a project location for the coal based power plant culminated in the Harbour Estate of Tuticorin Port Trust (VOCPT) and adjacent to the Tuticorin Thermal Power Station in Tamil Nadu. The Joint venture Company “NLC Tamilnadu Power Limited” was incorporated to implement the power project at Tuticorin and the promoters (viz, NLCIL and TNEB/TANGEDCO) share in the equity ratio of 89:11.


The Foundation stone for the Power Project at Tuticorin was laid by the then External Affairs Minister and His Excellency the President of India, Shri. Pranab Mukerjee on 28.02.2009. The Project was completed and trail operation commenced on 19-MAR-2014 in Unit-I & on 23-SEP-2014 in Unit-II.

Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) has been signed between the Company and the Southern states for sharing the power as under:

  • Tamil Nadu 439.02 MW
  • Karnataka 179.13 MW
  • Pondicherry 10.78 MW
  • Kerala  82.24 MW
  • Andhra Pradesh 133.18 MW
  • Telungana  155.65 MW

The Commercial Operation Declarations (CODs) were Achieved successfully for Unit-I on 18-Jun-2015 and for Unit-II on 29-Aug-2015.By this,The Power Capacity of NLCIL touched to a new height of 4301 MW in both Conventional and Green Power Segments.
